[This Big Gear for Big Riders Buyers Guide was originally published in the September 2010 issue of Rider magazine]

The more of you there is to protect, the more important it is to protect it! Our readers come in all sizes, and that’s just fine with us. One of the most common requests we get from them, in fact, is where to find riding gear in extra-big sizes. The following is a pretty good list of helmets, jackets, pants and boots for our riding friends who are livin’ large. It’s a great starting point in a hunt to get properly attired when nothing seems to fit.

For this guide we started well north of the commonly found sizes. Although most are available in punier versions, too, here we list helmets in 3XL and higher that are DOT approved. Jackets are at least 3XL for men, and a plus size or 2XL for women, and include armor. Pant sizes are trickier based on how the manufacturers classify them; here you’ll find some larger sizes for both men and women. Pants include knee armor, and some have hip armor, too. When it comes to boots, we found that anything over a size 13 men’s in regular width is hard to find, so we’ve listed companies that offer boots in at least a 14 men’s and 11 women’s and/or wide sizes.

Big guy Bruce is wearing an Arai Profile helmet, a Tourmaster Transition jacket, Roadgear Cordura Tierra Del Fuego pants and Wesco Jobmaster boots. Little guy James is wearing an Arai helmet and a Tourmaster Jett Youth jacket.

Staying cool in summer when you’re naturally well insulated is not that hard anymore. These days there’s good summer apparel available, like mesh jackets, that offer much more protection than a T-shirt in hot weather. Those available in big sizes with elbow and shoulder (and in most cases, back) armor are listed here.
