At the big Milan, Italy show this week, BMW Motorrad President Stephan Schaller announced that BMW Motorrad will introduce a new model in 2013 with the air-cooled “boxer” engine as a special way of marking the company’s 90-year anniversary.
The very first BMW motorcycle—the BMW R 32—was built in 1923 and established the basic platform for the boxer series for the next nine decades: an air-cooled, 2-cylinder 4-stroke opposed twin-cylinder engine with longitudinally mounted crankshaft and shaft final drive.
The new motorcycle will be produced next year. Based on the image provided it seems to have retro café-racer styling. The model designation and date of the market launch is TBD. Most BMW models make their way to the States eventually, so we’ll probably see this machine as a late 2013 or 2014 model.
