"Some of the research I’ve read even tries to sell the idea that if you’re traveling at 67 MPH and crash, your head with a helmet on will finally impact somewhere at the equivalent of hitting an anvil at 11 MPH! I think most of us are much more intelligent than that."
I believe the rant of Mr. Lockdown is skewed with the common typical sensationalistic style typical of the misinformed. A direct strike of a human skull perpendicular to a wall at a velocity of 10mph is enough to shatter bone fragment and brain matter like a concord grape between your fingers tips. Amount of mass traveling behind the head will determine the particular splatter pattern. Thus, the 11mph anvil test.
A helmet is NO guarantee of survival. The Hurt report: "Helmeted riders and passengers showed significantly lower head and neck injury for all types of injury, at all levels of injury severity." That 11mph Snell anvil test is a cushion I'd rather have than not.
As far as freedom, yeah, if you can afford your hospital bills, and your long-term gardening/fertilizing care (as you will be a vegetable), then fine. I oughta' have the right not to treat you if you don't wear a helmet and you show up without insurance, but noooooo, I gotta' treat. (Sorry!, 'almost started a rant )
