98% of the time i wear a skid lid but sometimes i get to where i don't want the hinderances of a lid so I go without. It's a personal choice, the brain bucket isn't going to always save your life, sometimes it will. It's all in the way you ride and the other guy that's not paying attention to you. What ever makes you happy... never drink/drug and ride .. ya'all ride on. Hawg gone...

I wear a helmet 99% of the time. That wasn't always the case... then I had a conversation with an aquaintance who suffered brain damage as a result of an motorcycle accident. It's a personal choice for everyone. That conversation helped me make mine.

Chelsea, I always wear a helmet when I go any further than the grocery store (1 mile). There is no helmet law in Colorado, but I still use one for a couple reasons.
Even though I have a fairing and reg. windshield on the FLHX, there are always rocks and grit kicked-up from cars, and bugs get around the screan somehow. That stuff hurts at 75mph! Also, the wind noise is much reduced and I have stereo speakers inside the helmet that I can hear my music just fine at highway speeds. That alone makes it worthwhile.
Helmets are a pain on hot days, but I just keep moving for some air ventilation. Crashing is always a possibility, so why not give yourself a little advantage?

Being a card-carrying Libertarian I am philosophically opposed to helmet laws. I believe in personal choice as long as it's coupled with personal responsibility.
Having said all that, I wouldn't ride around the block without wearing my lid.
Like many riders, I grew up on a dirt bike, and naturally progressed to road bikes when I achieved the age and the means. As a young man I considered spills in the dirt as part of the experience but I learned early on that without a helmet and other PPE it is little fun to fall off your bike. I began riding on the street about the time Kenny Roberts, Wayne Rainey, and Kevin Schwantz were dominating road racing. I noticed while watching them race that none of them were helmetless. There is a reason for that.
In 1999 I had the misfortune of a serious crash on the road. I'll spare everyone the crash details but suffice to say it was operator error. (I plead temporary stupidity). I ended spending 18 days in the hospital, half of those in ICU. I broke multiple bones, had internal injuries, and smacked my helmeted noggin on the pavement hard enough to suffer a brain injury.
After a couple of long years I made a full recovery and lived to tell about it, and to ride again. I have no doubt my helmet saved my life.
Today it rests in a place of honor in my garage where I never fail to show its bashed and battered shell to anyone who happens to ride up without wearing a helmet.
One final thought. As I mentioned at the start, I believe in personal choice. BUT... If you are married, have a family, or otherwise have people who care about you, consider the impact on them should your choice to ride without a lid result in you ending up with a debilitating head injury, or G*d forbid, dead.

As with many others here, I almost always wear a helmet but don't like the gov. telling me I have to. I raced MX and hare scrambles and enduros for years and have had helmets pretty beat up by crashes that I was glad wasn't my head. Sometimes I may take my dual sport bike down the gravel road I live on to cool off in the summer, or take my Concours 2 miles on quiet roads to get gas without a helmet.
That being said, sometimes I look at all the riders constantly going lidless, and think to myself that maybe many riders need a law to that effect.

The way I think of it is this.
If I am walking on the side walk at 2 miles per hour and I fall backwards or forwards, will my neck muscles be able to support the weight of my head when my body hits the ground?
Answer- No.
My neck muscles are not strong enough to resist the gravity of the fall or the momentum of the fall. If Im lucky. my head will bounce off my arm. If Im not lucky, my head will bounce on the concrete and I will be hurt.
Now add 40 or 50 miles per hour to that.
Do I want to wear a helmet?
Answer-Um...Duh. Yea Im pretty sure I want a good lid on my head.
I dont need a govnt to tell me to wear a helmet. I figured that out all by myself.

I used to not worry about a helmet as I live in a state that does not require a helmet, because I loved the freedom of the wind blowing! But, the more I thought about getting on the bike without protection made me very nervous as I had family to go home to! Also, I have had friends that were in accidents without helmets and had massive injuries that cost them there futures! THEREFORE I PROMOTE WEARING A HELMET, PEOPLE AROUND US DONT PAY ENOUGH ATTENTION!

The link worked for me, don't put the ) at the end into the url, then the page won't work. Thanks for posting the article. I think riders should have a choice. I will always wear a helmet, that is my choice. I also feel that seat belts should be a choice. I will always wear a seat belt but that is my choice. Government making rules to dictate the way people should live are just wrong. Yes they are useful guidelines but to be illegal to not wear a seat belt or a helmet is ridiculous. Anyways whether you choose to wear one or not just be safe everyone and if you have some great rides in interesting places please post your route on my online map at Allstate Insurance Route Mapor Allstate Insurance Motorcycle Map. I am an affiliate of allstate and thus I use their maps. Thanks everyone
