Blue, please tell me if your manual covers a Police Model RK. I bought the bike in 97, new, as a 98 model to do funeral escorts. Made good money, but some of the riders doing that, ride like they are trying to get a 'live' guy somewhere important. Dead guys don't care, and I quit after I watched a couple of riders really hurt themselves.

Anyhow, the Police model has some other weird things on it, and apparently the sensor is not where it is supposed to be on a civilian model.

There is a sensor on the right rear side of the case, behind the pushrod tube case, and above the oil line. It has one wire, and the wire is the same color code as one of the wires coming out of the sensor on my 04 TC 88, which is exactly where you said it would be, next to the O/F mount.

When I disconnect the wire, the oil light still stays on. Gonna start the bike and listen to it. My local independent shop mechanic, says if it doesn't sound like the motor is coming apart, it is prolly a wiring issue, and he will put a pressure guage on it to verify.

So I run it, and when it is straight up, the light goes out. Put it on the kickstand, and the light comes on. Stays on, but flickers, when I run the rpm up. Gonna change the oil and filter, and take a look in the filter, hope I don't find anything. Oh yeah, the motor is quiet.

OK, so I am thinking I may not try to cut apart the filter. Magnet in the drain plug had less yuck on it than my Ultra did last time. I filtered the oil, looking for any signs of metal, none. Light still flickers on when it is on sidestand. Hope to get it tested in the next few days.

Sorry Ride. The manual I'm referring to is a '07 Touring Models Service Manual. The oil pressure switch is different on Electra-Glide's as opposed to the Road Kings (two wires verses one wire)
Anyhow, back to your problem. The fact that the light stays on with the sensor/switch diconnected is proof that its shorting to the bikes frame. Unfortunatly you will have to message every inch of that wire until you find where it has chaffed to the frame. (Deal with this everyday at work on our F-16 fighter aircraft as you would not beleive how much they bend and flex while in flight)

Thanks. I keep full coverage insurance on the bike, even though it is technically his. We are going for a long ride next Thursday, and if he doesn't get it in and fixed, and I don't have time, well, TOWING is part of the coverage.

As far as the aircraft flexing in flight, I would think that it is absolutely amazing that those things hold together. We get the Blue Angels here every year for Sea Fair, and watching how hard they turn those aircraft makes me a believer. Plus I have watched carrier ops from the XO's chair (as a guest) on the Nimitz. Huge stresses on those planes, huge respect for the dudes and dudettes that use that postage stamp as an airport.

Ride Slow, The wiring diagram shows a green/yellow wire going to the oil pressure switch then up to a 8 pin connector (21A) which then goes to the instrument cluster and the fuse box (15amp instrument fuse)I believe you have located to oil pressure switch on your Police Model Road King.
Sorry to hear you won't have the time to fix it and are going to take it in for repair. (If that’s the case you won't get it back for your Thursday ride.)
Let me tell Y'all a story that happened about twenty years ago. I was riding my 86 Honda Shadow VT1100 to work one day and about a mile and a half from work the bike just quit and died on me. Initial investigation revealed that every time I hit the starter switch the ignition fuse would blow. I then had it hauled to a shop in the back of a pick-up truck my co-worker had. The shop kept/looked at it for a week. The service manager called me and said he still could not fix it and wondered if he should continue or stop and hand it back to me. I decided to take the bike back as I could see the repair bill adding up. The service manager felt bad that he could not get it fixed and only charged me a hundred dollars and offered to haul it back to my home. I asked him if he could photo copy the wire diagram and give me a copy. He said definitely. A day and a half later in the comfort of my garage about 8 hours or so total. I troubleshot it down to a shorted fuel pump.
I learned two valuable lessons back then. One, never underestimate your abilities and two, although you might think the dealer can fix anything they are no smarter then you. They just have the proper tools and tech data that you might not have.

Truth about the data. This would be an easy fix for me, if I had more time. He gets off work about 2 hrs before I do, but the bike sat for several days. This ride has been in the planning stages for over 8 months, so the dates are not a surprise. I had company from Kentucky, my service club is working a 3 day event in town beginning this Friday, I do deliveries for the local food bank on Saturday, and work at the church on Sunday. Monday is on call for work, and Tuesday thru Thursday noon is work. At 1:15pm, Thursday, I am meeting the other riders east of town, and we are gone for 5 days. I am still working the bugs out of our group communication device, theirs works, mine doesn't, and getting ready for the trip.

I actually like working on stuff, and don't mind working on other peoples stuff. But the other people have to help a little, too.

Oh yeah, watching my grand daughter, with the able assistance of my wife, while my daughter plays in a tournament this weekend.

The mechanic at the indy shop said he would do a quick pressure test on it, just to verify it has correct oil pressure. We were not going to leave it, he was just going to squeeze it in. My son had Friday off. When I got home the bike hadn't moved. I may sound a bit grumpy, but at this point I really don't give a flying leap if he rides it or not.

Thanks for the good info. I should have time in November to look at it.

Just got a call from a friend, he is riding down to Reno for some sort of event at the end of September, hot rods and hot bikes or something like that. sounds like a cool deal, thinking of going.

Progress, he took the bike to the shop today, and they suggested that he add an oil pressure gauge. He did, with a bit of help from dad, and with the bike idling on the kickstand, it is reading 20lbs, while the light is flashing. So, we either have a sensor problem, or a wiring problem. In any case, going for a ride soon.

You've just discovered why they're called "idiot" lights.

Actually, "idiotic" lights would have been a more appropriate name.

20 lbs seems pretty low to me actually....how much does it read when you open up the throttle ????
