Some friend and I are taking a trip to Maine in Sept. Any suggestion on things to see and places to go? We will have about 5 days to ride around.

Sounds like you will be seeing some good Fall foliage! If possible, I suggest a ride on Rt 2 in MA. It runs east to west along the top of a mountain. Google 'route 2 Ma'. Further north in New Hampshire, check out the Kancamangus highway. Google that too. Sounds like a great ride! Enjoy the scenery.

If you have the time, it would be great if you made it all the way North to a town called Madawaska. It's hailed as the most North Eastern town in the continental United States. Also my home town.
Please be watchful of the wildlife crossing the roadway.
Bring warm clothing for the mornings.

Have fun!

Try western ME up Rt 4 into Rangley Lakes region, Oquossic, very senic in the fall. Watch for animals on the road. Have seen Moose and deer as well as other critters roaming on the pavement.
have fun It's very nice riding, although the road is narrow.

In September, the view from the top of Mt. Battie in Camden is literally breath taking. Ocean and small mountains all around you, and a view of the village below. Just drive up Route 1 along the coast, past Rockland, into Camden, and follow the signs to drive up to the top of Mt. Battie. Here is a link you may find helpful- http://www.visitmaine.com/organization/2715/camden_hills_state_park/

From Camden, keep driving north on Route 1, all the way up to see Acadia National Park. Acadia has the tallest mountain on the US Atlantic coast- Cadillac Mountain. http://www.nps.gov/acad/

In September you won't be fighting as many tourists or black flies....you are going to Maine during a wonderful month!
