I'm an old fart, returning rider who lives in southern South Carolina. It gets a tad warm down here f/ June through mid-September; 90-to-100+ temps w/ humidity to match are not uncommon. I'm not about to forego my full-face helmet and gloves, but was wondering about a jacket.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a motorcycle jacket that won't broil the rider in these temperatures? There must be something out there; I just don't know what it is.
Thanks for any/all help/suggestions.

Search up AeroStitch, or riderwearhouse.com, should be something there. Swing by any shop that sells sport bikes, they should have some gear hanging on the rack, that will give you a chance to check for fit. Just not much in black.

I have a HD mesh jacket. My wife has a great TourMaster convertible jacket that has panels that zip out to make it a mesh jacket with full hard armor. Tourmaster makes great gear , even if is a little pricey. The last HD mini catalog I got had a aqua vest thing..A vest that you soak in water that supposedly cools you off as you ride..Interesting...

Just curious LowCountry..Did you have a bad experience with an open face helmet? I just retired my shorty helmet for good. If you saw my 'Harley and the full face helmet' post..you know why I don't wear my shorty any more.

No Jazzman, I've never had a bad experience w/ a shorty helmet. Maybe that's because I've never worn one. From Day 1 I've always worn a full-face even though the shorty looks like it would provide much better ventilation and less visual obstruction. I'm not a zealot, but I just think the full-face offers the best protection. This impression was driven home to me when one of the doctors at NASCAR stated that if Dale, Sr. had been wearing a full-face he'd probably be alive today. Now, I believe, NASCAR mandates full-face for all drivers. And, yes, I did see your post and picture of the Mercedes. Thanks for sharing that one; as the man said, "A picture is worth a thousand words."

Yes, a mesh jacket is the way to go. Air flows thru it and it has armor in the right places (removable) and the material will protect against road rash. Acutally, I find that wearing a damp shirt underneath when riding in hot weather almost makes it to cool sometimes. Fieldsheer makes great stuff and is usually sold at discounts on the net.

It doesn't get that hot here, so I wear a full leather jacket that I've had for 25 years all the time. When I went to Milwaukee for the 105th Anniversary last August, I had to soak my shirt with cold water under the jacket while riding through Iowa and Wisconsin. Thought I was gonna melt! Worked for a couple hours each time, and was a good excuse to stop every now and then.
Jazzman, I also wear a full-face helmet, but just bought a shorty for those hot weather trips. Haven't used it yet though. Do you feel they're not safe?

I go back and forth on the helmet thing. I honestly feel better with the full-face but I like the convenience of an open-face. I have a 7 3/4 long oval head. Its hard to get a shorty to fit right on me anyway. The 3/4 helmets are out of the question. They never fit. I'm still looking. My wife uses a Bell Mag-8 for her summer helmet. I've had two friends take a fall in the last year. One got clipped by car, (classic left turn into bike maneuver), and bonked his head on the hood and the ground. His leg was badly broken but his full-face helmet kept him handsome. The other one, (wearing a shorty), came into a turn a little too fast and slid off the shoulder. She got her hands out in front just in time to only get a skinned chin. Scary if you think about it too much.

+1 on the wet shirt. I've stopped at gas stations, bought bottled water, and dumped it over my head just to get wet before. It feels great when you get back on the bike and start moving.
I can't find the link now, but Aerostich used to sell a small sprayer that would spray a fine mist of water on you ever so often.
