When I started this thread a few days ago, I didn't realize the emotions/passions it would generate. I was just honestly looking for opinions. By now, I guess we can all agree we've beaten this subject to death. But before closing, I want to thank everyone for taking the time to express what they feel about "A Beer or Two with Lunch."

Personally, I have two cousins that have had serious accidents while riding. One ran his Harley off the road (straight road) and suffered a broken neck. Luckily for him, there was no paralysis. Another cousin of mine was riding and ran a stop sign. He was t-boned by a car and lost his leg just below the knee.
Both had been drinking.

It was a great topic....brought to light that too many people don't care and like to drink and drive. I can see why it took so long for laws to be enacted that smacks this practice down. Basically it's just that so many people drink and no one is going to tell them what to do because they are special.

If anyone believes municipal helmet laws are in affect because the state really cares for your safety, they are seriously mistaken.
When these laws are passed it's because the Insurence lobbyists were succesful. It is all $$$$ driven. Insurance companies will pay out less in claims money if the rider wears a helmet. Same goes for seatbelt laws. We the the citizens are the mice in this maze of "laws passed to protect our safety". I'm from Connecticut, we have no helmet law but like all states we do have a "seat belt" law. All states have the "Buckle up" law, why? It's because statisticly more people drive cars than ride motorcycles, so the insurence companies focus their lobbying on the car driver, and like all good mice, we abide by the "rules" to avoide a $70.00 fine. Interestingly though, is the fact that seat belts are NOT mandated for use on school buses OR public bus transportation!!! Why? I believe the lobbyists were not successful in getting those laws introduced or passed.
Thirty+ years ago I was involved in a single car accident due to icy road conditions. The car rolled over twice. If I were wearing a seat belt, the steering column would have gone through my chest. By not wearing a seat belt I was able to lay across the console putting my head on the passenger seat. It was a freak situation, and proved to me that seat belts are not the 100% cure all and in some cases, is a death trap.
I have strayed from my point, which is, we are sheep and we have lost the ability to make our own free choice because of huge amounts of money supported laws forced upon us by large corporations, in this case, Insurance companies.I wear a helmet because I choose to. I have a wife and family and I know if I were to get into a serious accident riding my bike, the best case scenario is I don't get hurt, middle case scenario is, I die. Worst case scenario is having to eat all my meals through a straw, using boxes of tissue everyday because I drool and knowing my wife now lives in a rented apartment because my long term medical care caused me to lose our house. Wear the helmet, if not for yourself, for your loved ones.

It's all about control and power. I don't like what you are doing so I need to control it. The helmet and seatbelt laws are more about insurance money than safety. Safety is a good disguise that most people will get behind. Control yourself, and stop worrying about what other people do.

The helmet and seatbelt laws are ONLY concerned about insurance company money.
It's the insurance companies that lobby for these laws. IMO, there is absolutely no concern for safety, just the money the insurance companies are attempting to save themselves.
As far as being in control, I couldn't care less what other people do as far as wearing a helmet, hey, it's their head! I am concerned about the idiot who, drives drunk because that makes my family, me and my friends and neighbors vulnerable! I cannot understand why beer or any alcohol for that matter, is available at these biker meets. It makes no sense. Cops know when these meets occur and sometimes they wait for these inebriated riders to make their exit and they get nailed, then again, sometimes the cops are nowhere to be found. As far as I'm concerned if someone has beer and is out there in the summer sun taking in the sights at a meet, they deserve to lose their license....period, because they are too dumb to ride! I believe some people on this board may not like this post. Keep this in mind, "your freedom ends where my freedom begins"

A community close by has what they call Erntefest every year. It's a celebration of German heritage that really amounts to nothing more than a bunch of poeople standing in a field and getting drunk. I've gone a few times, and the one thing I've noticed is the police presence. They are all over the festival and quick to throw out troublemakers. At midnight, the police all get in a line, hold hands, and push everyone out to the parking lot.
I've seen police officers pick up drunks and walk them to their cars then send them on their way.
In all the years of this festival, I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over on the drive home.
It comes down to money. The police will look the other way if the community wants them to do so.
