Should I take my brand new bike on road trip to break it in?

I would follow the instructions in the owner's manual. Unless it states that no breakin is necessary, I wouldn't. IMO a new engine should be pampered for the first 1K miles. A constant speed of any kind could be the worst thing to do to the engine. What bike did you get? Good Luck with it! & Ride Safely!

Thanks for the reply. I do a lot of commuting into DC, so I just got a little Ninja 250.

I guess you can assume MPG will be btwn 70 and 80 MPG! Can't say that I blame you. A 250 cc will give you excellent milage. Be very careful of the wind and whizzing traffic.

New engine breakin is a very touchy subject. You will find two different camps. One is take it easy. The other is ride it like you stole it. Below is the web site that promotes ride it like you stole it. I think both camps agree that a steady constant speed is bad for the break in.
I commute to dc as well. Riding a road king, I ride from beltsville to dc around catholic university.
Anyhow here is the web site. Not for or against, just sparking the flames.

Hi,
I would break it in gently think of it a virgin.Gradually increase the revs over the first 600- 1000 miles, but which ever method you take keep varing your speed probably best avoiding freeways, and ninja's are made for the twisties anyway!.Brings back memories the most miles i done was on a 250 twin a 1982 GS250T 44000miles in under 3 years.
Safe riding,
Mark.
