Why do we wave to other riders? It seems a little kiddish.
What kind of wave is appropriate? The hand in the air from the female on the back of a Goldwing, the cool two fingered low salute from the crotch rocket rider, or the casual wave from the rest of us?
I propose a new greeting altogether--a closed fist pointed ahead just below your left mirror, you know, like you do when you touch fists with your buds in the hallway.

Why do we wave? I believe it's a sign of comradery for bikers. Some bikers can't be bothered, I say Ok no problem. Many years ago when the VW Beetle was gaining popularity, those Beetle drivers always gave a sign by beeping the horn or waving. I guess it was the same as the biker wave of today. Instead of the wave I prefer a Head-Nod. It's not the same as a wave but it means the same thing and it's safer!

I think it's nice to do. Also a comradery thing. It gives us a sense of unity. Wave however you want. Start a new trend, a new "biker" thing.

I think the best way to explain why we wave, is to imagine yourself living in Africa and you are the only white man in the whole area. Just think how excited you would be when you met another white man!
We are a minority out there on the road and it's nice to meet others who share our passion for bikes... as opposed to all the others who are trying to kill us!

I wave, and it doesn't matter if the other biker waves back. It unity thing. We get no respect from other folks in cages, we get blamed for all the noise, the goverment tries to restrict us. We have to look out for each other. It's an acknowledgement that I am glad you are out there.

I know what you mean! I like to keep both hands on the bars. I ride conservatively, haven't been doing it long, only for about 6 years so I'm just a little gun-shy. I figure a little gun-shy is good because it keeps me from doing something real stupid.

To wave is to show all bikers the world over we are united together no matter color or country.(if only all world leaders were bikers!)I usually give a nod or a flash of the lights(being in the UK i don't have to ride with them on)and sometimes a wave if i'm travelling below three digits! When in europe most bikers wave with there foot, at first i thought they were being offensive as this is what the rockers done to mods in the 60's so i gave them the finger,but since i've learned otherwise!So no matter what their riding salute your fellow riding brothers and sisters, and Harley guys Salute them rice riders!!!
