There are lots of used, low mileage Harleys on the market. There will be more when people affected by sub-prime mortgages start selling their bikes.

According to the AMA, 7,500 is considered the national "average' for all parts of the country and all types of riders.
Remember, to arrive at an average, you have to have 500 miles a year riders at one end of the spectrum, and 12,000 miles a year riders at the other end.

well...I tell ya....one thing for sure...if I was in the market for a Harley...I'd be shopping the used bikes.....there are a gazillion really, really nice bikes out there...all nicely done up by the previous owner, low miles.... superbly maintained....and for a substantial amount less...I would'nt even think about buying a new bike.
Lotsa people think a new bike gives you a warranty...so what...new bikes are'nt supposed to break in the first place...so it does'nt mean shiitola....
a used bike with 3000 miles on it...is NEW in my book......the odds of it breaking are practically nil !!!!

Good point. If a bike was going to fail, it would typically happen before 3k milees. I'd look for a used bike that has warranty coverage remaining or a transferrable extended warranty.
If you follow the classifieds, you'll find there are more and more package deals. I'm talking a seller who's offering a bike, bike cover, leather jacket, helmet and more.

Jeez, I've put 13K this year on my '05 Road King Custom and I'm nowhere near ready to hang up my leathers.
Maybe it depends on the part of the country and the expectations about how much time you can ride?

A car loses almost 40% of its value in the first two years. I would assume that a motorcycle does the same. I would look for a bike at least two years old with as low miles as I could find if I were looking. I would also, however, be wondering if this 2000 mile bike was properly broken in.I do believe that these kinds of riders do everything by the book, so it is more than likely all good. The price on the new ones is high becausethese guys will pay it, and the used market is tough on the high mileage guys because these low mileage guys paid too much for their bikes. It's a free market economy. Who benifits?

well....Payloader...a car or bike does'nt really lose 40% of the value per se....what it's price reflects after 2 years...is it's actual price without the dealer markup or profit.....but I agree.....a 2 year old car or bike is generally speaking going to be in tip-top shape.....
My opinion stands..in that I think you'll get better value for your money by shopping a 2-3 year old bike ( or car ) vs. spending it for a " new" car as the original owner will have paid the " dealer profit ".....leaving your purchase to reflect the " real" price of the bike...

I didn't list my price before, because I didn't want to come off as I was trying to sell my bike on this forum, and I'm not. I paid 19,717.00 out the door, and I'm asking 12,500.00 with 2.6k in extras and a documented service record. I see most other Road Kings in the 14k to 15k range and some of them are 02, 03, & 04 models. I just thought this thing would fly out the door, but I've only had one guy actually look at the bike, I've had some calls but one came to look. I know a guy that buys bikes wholesale for cash and his offer is 11k, I think it's just too low. Like he says "Americans just don't have any money, if I could offer financing it would be gone tomorrow.

It's a bad time to be selling a bike.
ALL the dealers are hurting right now - regardless of brand and regardless of location.
Besides, winter is fast approaching in much of the country.
If you can wait for spring, you'll get even more than you will right now.

....I tried for the longest time to sell my bike...I had it advertised in the local paper....I had it advertised in in a magazine devoted purely to the sale of motorcycles...I had it advertised on ebay...and I had it parked on a street corner....all to no avail...did not even get one bite....
...the motorcycle magazine must have had 1,000's of bikes in there...of every make....H-D's alone must have accounted for several 100...
..I finally bit the bullet and " traded" it in....for my Heritage...
..ironically....my " used" bike was put out in front of the dealership with the other used bikes and sold within a week...so go figure...
