120 miles on a great day to ride, bikes everywhere!!!!!

Rick, John, Paul & Kimberly, on Kimberly's V-Rod at the Iron Horse for breakfast. (Not one of my better ideas, place was still rocking from the New Years Party.)

Rainier Beer Road (used in a commercial, years ago...)

Rick peeled off just outside of Buckley to join American Cycles ride.

My kind of road sign, with John in foreground.

Roads were in good shape, and it was actually getting warmer. We had an easy pace, and saw a number of other riders out.
At the break by Lake Kapowsin, I suggested we change our destination to Elbe, due to the weather being so nice.

Changed route, continued south on Oroville, thru Eatonville, (got tones on the radio for the following Hazardous Weather Warning)

High Wind Warning

URGENT - WEATHER MESSAGE

BEING PUSHED AROUND BY WINDS OF THIS MAGNITUDE.

and had lunch at the Scaleburgers in Elbe.

We were getting blown around pretty good, I pulled out from a stop to turn left, and the bike went right! Some places had no wind at all, just hard to tell. Snow on the side of the road along the Alder Cut-off, but temps were warm enough that the thought of ice was far from current.

We rode north along Highway 7, and finished up as the clouds started to move in. Going to take a nap, and warm up. Will put some pictures later.

Here is a link to pictures from one of the other riders:

Hard choice today, go skiing, or go riding. Getting the urge to consume oysters at Chesters, called Dean and he was in. We met at the Big Foot Java, at SR 18 and SR 164. They have an outside table, room to spread out a map. My jaw about hit the wood when Dean rode up on a spanking new Wing. I guess putting 110,000 on his first Wing qualifies him for number 2. This will literally be his second ride on the bike, first was a loop around the Olympic Peninsula, 450+ miles, on Presidents Day, while I was skiing.

We choose a route, and head out. West on SR 18, south on I-5, west on SR 16 across the new Narrows Bridge, and then west on SR 3, to Belfair. Just outside of Belfair, we pick up SR 106. Blue sky day, temps heading for the 50's, only downside is Saturday traffic. We swing by Gerbings on the chance they are open, and they are! I pick up an extension for the plug in, and Dean gets a set of heated pants liners from the discount bin. Good stuff, and we find out the Outlet Web Site will probably not run this year, they are moving to the industrial area south of the Olympia Airport. 2 more riders pull in as we leave. Good timing. We head west then south on McReavy Rd. If you are on a grade, or at an intersection, plan on slipping around on sand. Snow and ice over the past few weeks have got sanding crews out, trying to assist the lowest common denominator in operating the cage, when they should have stayed home. We work our way to Shelton, then west on Shelton Valley Rd., then west on Cloquallam Rd. These are narrow two lane roads rolling up and down, and around, probably originally game trails, and now paved to keep the little farms alive.

Come around one corner, and in front of the barn is a steel hull service boat, I would guess 30' long, and in a state of repair. Someone has dreams of sea travel, it looks like they are preparing it for personal use. We go past a farm that has been retired and restored, and is now used to teach kids what country life was like.

We picked up SR 12 in Brady, and did the freeway flyer until we got to Aberdeen, and headed south then west on SR 105. Still clear skies, and the view out across Grays Harbor was awesome. Made the loop out to the coast and back to Raymond, surfers waiting for better waves, kids wandering around in the sand, and the wind blowing stuff around. This area has suffered some severe weather lately, sand piled up on both sides of the road, trees blown over, buildings crushed. And now we are cruising on a sunny day. Strange. Getting hungry, so we pick up the pace, and soon are parked in front of Chesters in South Bend. After about 18 oysters for each of us, plus fries, we are wondering if we will just sleep right here.

Weather is still looking good, and we have no time constraints, so we head south. SR 101, to SR 4, east bound, thru Naselle and off the beaten path to the Grays River Covered Bridge. This is one of the areas that was inundated during the storms, and water has marked fairly high along the edge of the valley. Hoping the bridge is intact, come around the corner, and it is! We ride across, stop, and snap a couple of photos. (Will get them up later)

We continue east on SR 4, with one exception, Dean has switched bikes with me. OK, I ride a Harley, and really like it. If you are thinking of a Gold Wing as big, ungainly, or lumbersome, you be wrong. This thing rocks! Lot of power, lots of gadgets. Handles great. Only one problem, the seat is killing me. Give me back my Milwaukie Vibrator. I wave Dean over, gush about his new bike, and snatch mine back. There is a sort of back way north out of Longview, just west of I-5, and it goes all the way north to Napavine. We angle over to the I-5 freeway, and stop to refuel before we blast north.

I will fill in a few more details, with pictures, later. Tired. 391 miles, great day....

Me?
Parked until the snow is gone.
I dont like to ride when there is wet on the ground and snow around.
That meens where there is no sun, there is potential ice. Even when most of the roads are just wet.
I dont like suprize slips.
Every so often I go out to the garage and check on the bike though.
It makes me feel better.
Got out a few hours before it started to snow though. took the bike about 40 miles east of my home and got a hot bowl of chicken soup from Penera bread. They bake a fresh round loaf of bread, dig out the inside and fill it with hot soup. MMMMMM... Nothing warms you up better. Threw back a hot cupa cauffee and I was ready for another 100 miles.

The stories were so cool makes me want to tear the cover off my ultra drop
it off the stand and listen to the great sound of those new slip ons I installed
this winter, but alas the temp reads 17 above let, the Harley sleep

foot note; I should have moved to Fla 20 years
ago!!!

30 degrees this morning at 6 am, felt colder. No ice, and very little fog. Only saw one other rider, surprised more folks aren't riding with gas at 3.70 a gallon. Diesel is 3.99 !!!!!

Taco Thursday is coming, weather report is good.

Decent weather, jacket stayed in the tail box, even though still snow on the side of the road in some places. Where were all the bikes? More cages than bikes at Cumberland City Hall, may be 20 bikes at the most. Yella Beak was about even, about 30 bikes. Put on the jacket and plugged in the gear for the ride home. Too short a ride, Rick and I both agreed that we need to get closer to 300 miles, maybe next week, any good Taco joints in Astoria?

70 degree day last week in washington, dc. Got the wife after work, spent a couple of hours checking out the cherry blossoms downtown. Lot of bikes out that day. Generally ride every day to work.

Found a great BBQ joint, in a warehouse, over the water. The owner is a rider, and has a cool restored Boxer in the hall in front of the store. Lots of other cool stuff inside. Left Des Moines at 1, stopped at Chesters in South Bend for a late lunch, dinner in Astoria, and home by 11. 356 miles, good day.

Go visit Rolling Thunder BBQ, tell 'em rideslow sent you.

Set off today at 6-45am to meet up with the Charlie Boorman ride at Oxford.By the time i'd riden the 50miles to get there i could hardly feel my hands as the weather was below freezing, still very picturesque over the rolling hills with sunshine and a light mist.Charlie turned up on his 1950's Triumph chopper, Russ on a 78 Norton Commando, and the cameraman on a 76 Trident. There was around 700+ motorcycles on the ride onto the Ace cafe London and what an amazing sight it was on the motorway seeing mainly motorcycles in front and the same in the mirrors. So Charlie and his crew had a good send off from the cafe on their round the world adventure "By any means" to be aired later in the year. They left for the port on a London red double decker bus with Charlie driving.
After the usual good breakfast i left the cafe in the now warm sunshine to spend a couple of hours at Windsor castle. After a Mc Milkshake homeward bound backroads via Henley-on -thames great riding apart from the last 30miles in cold pouring rain(well it is England)and finally put the old trumpet back in the garage with another 225 clicks on it.Did i clean it? No might be raing tommorrow and our weekly summertime(and i use that word lightly!) wednesday night meets start. As luck would have it the first pub meet only 5 miles away.Oh happy days.
