I'm looking into the cruiser field myself, and some time consuming research on the internet has me changing my mind from the chain drive to a shaft driven bike. I want to be riding, not oiling. Esspecially on a long haul, you don't want to be stopping to grease up as some suggest that it should be done every couple of hundred miles, or after every bout with rain.
Shaft systems put more weight on the bike, but nothing that most people compain about. Additionally I've heard that the cost of replacing a shaft is still cheaper than the numerous chain & sprocket replacements you would do during the same time period. Chains for the sport bikes and dirts, shaft for the cruisers and touring bikes.
Just stay away from the Belts... there's a headache when adjusting and doing a remove/replace. (tends to involve more than removing the back wheel!ouch)

I don't "think" I'll ever ride a chain drive again, unless it's a dirtbike.
On a cruiser I doubt youll care if it's a shaft, you notice a shaft more when you haul butt a lot, or ride agressively in turns and such, straight line racing is ok. One thing about a shaft though, if you slam on the brakes withut a good suspension set up, or an unadjustable suspension, your rear tire CAN wheel hop like crazy...depends on the bike too I imagine
maybe someone else can go into that more as to why...has to do with rebound I think

Chains good
Shafts good
Belts better.
You have to do periodic maintenance on shafts that is a PITA (lube drive spines, change oil, etc.). Way more maintenance than a kevlar-reinforced belt. Change it once every 50K miles and fuggeddaboudit.
