I had to replace a pad on the passenger floorboard once. The only way I could get the nip thru the hole was to reach thru with a narrow needlenose plier and pull it thru. WD-40 for lube, beer for inspiration.

Thanks for the advice Ride, but these are solid bottom versions, no holes to pull anything through. I will use the beer however...

Nothing at HD is priced reasonably. I took off the heal shifter on my scoot and they wanted $50 for the little chrome cap! It doesn't look that dang bad!

...no schit.....I stopped by the H-D dealer to buy a light buld for my front fender light....( H-D in their infinite wisdom has made it so, that you can't just go down to your local hardware store and buy a $1 replacement)....oh nooooo.....you must go to the dealer and cough up $3.42c for the filament....yes...just the filament...not even a completer bulb....

I took my heel shifter off about 37000 miles ago, and don't mind the little end showing. I don't need to polish anymore chrome anyway.

If you take the heel shifter off, and don't move the toe shifter outboard on the shaft, you really haven't accomplished anything other than eliminating the heel shifter, as the toe shifter is mounted in the inboard position.
But, if you move the toe shifter to the outboard position, in order to get a little more comfort when shifting, the shaft then has too much end play and can lead to linkage failure and shaft wear.
With both shift levers installed, the inboard toe shifter acts as a spacer to regulate end play.
Removing the heel shifter and moving the toe shifter outboard on the shaft was one of the first things I did when I bought my Road King, but I installed a spacer to keep the linkage in proper alignment.
I'm sure you could make a spacer to accomplish the same thing, but I sprung for the chrome spacer from Kuryakyn.
Now I feel a little less "pigion-toed" when I go for the shifter, and with the proper spacer in place, I don't have to worry about linkage failure due to mis-alignment.
