With enough Jose you may get to see Dawn's early light.

So, I'm riding home from work today. I am on a two lane divided street, two lanes each direction. I am in the Left part of the Right lane, and I pass a new (still had the temp tag) Triumph. He is in the Left lane a space or two ahead to my left. I go past him with traffic, out of the corner of my eye I see some movement in my Lefthand mirror that led me to think someone was real close to me. I look in the mirror and see the Triumph has moved into my lane right behind me. He was thisclose. I moved to the Right part of MY lane, and he just cruises up next to me as I stop at the light. I look over and say, "Hey." He says, "Hey." the light turns green, and we go. I fall back because I don't like sharing my lane with people who are just passing thru. I find that kinda rude. I'm not sure if most consider it rude, but I do. It was like I had to get over so he wouldn't hit me. I don't mind riding next to someone, but to just take MY lane without an invite, or any special reason, ie to talk about bikes or something. I feel that it's rude. This has only happened two maybe three times in my life. I have never thought I could do that without being intrusive. Seems common sensical to me. So, I believe most people feel the same way. I figured that he was a newbie rider and didn't waste too much energy on it. Enough to write this I guess. So, am I being over sensitive, or what?

No. He invaded your "personal" space. Like what my daughter says is her "bubble". You don't intrude unless invited and you didn't invite this rider into your space. Some people like toe to toe conversations whereas most prefer a bit of "breathing room" when engaging with another. Same with riding.

Now if this other rider were of the opposite sex, that could be another matter.

It happened to me once, and I just eased back, about the same as you did. Riding that close is very unsettling, and not safe at all, with a stranger. Now if you ride with me on a regular basis, we will be close enough to talk, bump mirrors, and mess with each others controls.

I agree with you 100%. I have had other riders pull up to me when I have stopped. Usually they comment about the bikes, weather or say hello, but then back off when we get rolling. It would make me very uncomfortable to ride side by side with someone who I didn't know their skill level. I think you had every right to be pissed.

Know how you feel. Been riding 40+ yrs and it makes me uncomfortable to have
a stranger come up and ride beside me. I just back-off and let them lead. If
they back-off to ride beside me then I turn off or pull over and stop. It is
hard riding with someone you do not know. I like to know who I'm riding with.
The people I know that ride with me know my comfort zone and they respect it
and I respect there's. That stranger does not know how you ride so why take the
chance for something to happen. Riding in today's world you have to be 110%.
Always watching the other guy no matter what they ride or drive. You did the
right thing. Have fun and ride safe.

I wouldn't have liked a stranger riding next to me either. In fact, I prefer the staggered approach even when riding with someone I know. I want the whole width of the lane to choose my own line, especially on poker runs. I'm still not sure I like them, but I seem to still ride in one or two every season.

I still ride with one of my buddies from high school. Sometimes its the two of us with his wife and my girlfriend or one of his buddies from work. We always ride staggered unless he waves me up to discuss where the next turn is. The guy is a walking talking atlas. He knows roads all over the place and how to get to them all without ever consulting a map. I get lost going around the block. It makes for a good combo. His buddy couldn't care less where in line he is when we go riding.

In Jersey I frequently have people pulling up next to me in my lane. Unfortunately they are usually in cages. If they can fit in the lane they do. I usually explain why they shouldn't be where they are and many just plain don't get it or think there isn't a good reason that they can't pass me in my lane. Don't know if it is a Jersey thing but it seems to be where I encounter it the most.

The last time this happened to me it was some guy from outta state (I don't know if that means anything or not) and he passed me in my lane. That was freaky, 'cuz I didn't expect that. On a freeway. At 70 mph.
