RE: Stator & jump starts

I did some checking with different mechanics, and as long as the bike isn't running, it comes directly off the battery. I'ma thinking I will tap in a cord to work with my battery tender plug, that thing is fused, for additional protection, funny how the Harley is always the one that is still running.....

RE: Where did you ride today?

Very nice pics Ride_Slow. Are these shots all from Jasper and Lake Louise? Sorry to hear about your electrical problems. You should not use your bike to give jump-starts. Been doing the jump start thing fer a long time.....as long as the bike isn't running, it should not affect the stator. Sorry the pics aren't captioned, once I get a bit more organized, will fill in the blanks. I hope to get a Google route map up, also.

RE: Where did you ride today?

:DYa, I had a good ride as well. Not as long as yours though. From Caldwell I went north on 95 up to Hells Canyon and was intending to ride up to the viewpoint on the otherside but the road was washed out. Rode back to 95 and went up to New Meadows and then south on 55. Only about 350 miles. Sure was fun on my new to me 1800. The 25 mph limit down by the water was sure the pits. Good thing I didn't see any Sheriffs. ;) Went thru that stretch of 25 mph a few years ago. Really nice curvy roads, but we had passed some sort of Sheriff near the viewpoint, so we were thinking he might have called ahead. Sure 'nuff, right where we coulda been doing about 60, was an unmarked cruiser, working the beam. He was set up and ready for us. HWY 12 to LOLO is getting a lot of pressure these days, also.

Stator & jump starts

Could I have ruined the stator by jump starting other vehicles? Is there a particular technique to use when jump starting other vehicles?

RE: Where did you ride today?

Update: Stator grounded out. Probably took voltage regulator with it. While it is apart, I am going to have them look very closely at the drive belt, will probably replace it. Will save a couple of hundred on labor to do it all at once. Rats.

RE: Where did you ride today?

How did everything turn out? We had 3 days on the U-Haul, so I left the bike in, and just took it down to NW Harley in Lacey. They were inundated with scoots coming back from Sturgis and other long trips, I had just asked if they could keep it there, until a diagnostic slot opened up. He asked if any rush, and I said no, just want to get it figured out and fixed right. so, I will get a call next week, and then we will schedule a slot to fix it. It is hopefully the regulator, the stator will involve more labor, and I don't have the tools to do that one myself. I didn't ride anywhere. Instead I got laid off and helped the Repo Man load my Triumph Rocket III Touring on a flatbed truck. :( I was wondering, I haven't been back to yearroundriders for quite awhile, and I didn't know yer bike was gone. That is truly sad. I have experienced the pain of watching yer pride and joy go away on a trailer. My part time job has no medical, so I am looking, too. Good luck.

RE: Where did you ride today?

Here's a first. 350 miles in a U-Haul. Blanking HOG tow is only good for closest dealer. Don't work when yer 350 miles from home, and yer charging system takes a powder, and you absolutely, positively have to be at work Tuesday am. But the Harley wasn't alone, the BMW GS was pumping oil out the front mail seal, so my scooter had company for the trip.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

...I rode my bicycle up and down the beach today :-) ...did'nt need no road map... ..I kin give ya a very detailed bikini report though :-) Ya sure, bikini boy, you just trying to get me in serious trouble.. It's been quite pleasant riding here lately, with temps in the low 70's and a rain shower every afternoon for about 30 minutes. Air is so clean and cool that it feels like watching a travel video in HD unfold in front of you as you ride. Maybe it's my new prescription shades, but it feels unreal....... It does help to be able to see where you are going. I have been thru your neck of the woods a few times, and it really is spectacular, especially after the wind and rain clear the air.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

We did a 1772 mile ride started out on the 3rd of July and returned home on the 10th. We did the South this year. Enterprise, AL, Mobile, New Orleans, Natchez, MS, Memphis, Nashville back to Athens, AL. The Natchez trace is great. At the end of the trace just outside Nashville there is a place called Loveless Cafe. Great food. HH riding, eating, riding some more. Great trip. Did ya map it? got a link? We just got back from an 8 day family trip. The right front floor of the truck is piled up with new maps, state travel glossies, and local and regional tourism brochures. This stuff is like glazed old fashioned donuts for me, just don't know when to stop!

RE: Magazine Gone?

Still have a portable Royal in the home office, if I open the case, it still has that ribbon ink smell, and my very valuable pack of 'Correct Type' sheets is tucked in there. In my old warehouse, the 'ladies' were in the office, they ran a computer that used some sort of punch card to run inventory, I was hand typing all the shipping orders. Commuting on a CB 350, advised I had to park it around the side of the building, boss didn't want no motorcycles in front of his bidness. As far as the magazines go, I still have the first one I bought, in 1967, June, I think, would have to go look. I really look forward to getting the magazines every month, heading for the recliner, with a cup of black coffee and some cookies, and getting some down time, reading about places I want to go, and stuff I would like to have. Family has figured out to stay away, or I am gonna say, hey, let me read this to you, something by Clem, or Jack Lewis, or Greg.

RE: Magazine Gone?

I have to agree with Reg, I have been a subscriber to Rider, off and on, over 25 yrs. Still have most of the old issues, the magazine grew out of the Rouse family, looking at a more specialized focus. It sorta matched mine, I like to ride, I like to read about places I want to ride, and I like to read about bikes I might want to ride. I also figure the folks at the magazine might have something to teach me about riding, and traveling. I had my first Shovel in 1983, that was not a bike I would ride across the country, have had several other bikes, now have an Ultra, that I would ride anywhere in the world. Dual Carb has a great magazine, but is very HD and v-twin specific, even when they offered twice what anyone else would pay for submitted and published articles about travel, the cupboard was pretty bare. Not that I have had anything published, but I tried. I guess I said all that to say this, I am sorry AR is gone, but I will continue to subscribe to Rider. Now, I will be P/O'd if they cancel the 40th....

RE: Triumph, the great and the not so great

Interesting. I like to hear about different bikes. My Ultra is my do everything, but lately has been just a commuter. Did go by Eastside, to look at the NOS bikes, think it was the Rocket, windshield and bags, pretty good price, but the same reason I stay with the Harley has been what you are facing with parts. I could be anywhere in the country, and get parts for my bike, if not in stock, probably a day away. I had Girling hydraulics on an old International, was down for 3 months, waiting for parts from the auld sod. This bike is my 4th Triumph and this is the first parts problem I have had. I have noticed with Triumphs that they don't often need "parts" other than typical maintenance stuff which is always available. I've had Harleys too and generally had a larger concern about parts availability than with Triumph. Please don't take that as a shot at Harley. I like them. But my honest observation is that there are more maintenance issues than with Triumph. Maybe this issue is simply because it is a brand new bike. Not at all, more an observation based on your experiences. I also really liked the Moto Guzzi Norge, but again, as reliable as the bike may be, not every big city has someone that can work on those. Another bike I really looked at, was the new Concours, but they seem to be going thru tires pretty quickly, and even though I change my own, having to do it every 5 to 8 thousand, vs. every 12 to 20 thousand, is a big difference.
