RE: Anybody like the new Sportster 48?

My Sporty gave me 10 trouble free, grin making, teeth rattling, kidney shaking years of riding. Sold it to my neighbor for almost what I paid for it and he loves it.

Go to the Advanced Post Form (above the quick post box) for more posting options and click the 12th button from the left above the reply box. It will ask you for the URL of the photo on the good old www. It has to be on the web, you can't post it from your PC. There are plenty of free photo hosting sites. Short of that you can e-mail me the photo and I'll host it on a site that I keep to play around with. Hope that helps.

RE: Road trip to Sturgis...

It is definitely about the scenery in that neck of the woods. Alladin, POP.16, had a good old fashioned general store. I wanted to gas up and the lady at the counter said, "go ahead, come on back and let me know how much you got". Riding out to Devil's Tower, the Badlands, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse monument with 5,000 of your newest best friends is awesome. Needles Highway, Custer State Park with herds of buffalo, the area around Deadwood are also great places to see. Really takes you back to the Zane Grey books. I would love to go again.

RE: Road trip to Sturgis...

Getting through Sturgis and out to the highway is a nightmare. When I was there in '03 there was a road that bypassed the town if you were approaching from the Buffalo Chip/Glencoe/Full Throttle Saloon area. Only problem is that it was gravel. Slow ride and beautiful scenery and you didn't have to spend hours getting through town.
Camping outside of Sturgis is probably some good advice. I liked Glencoe for its proximity to the Full Throttle and it was on the "Party Bus" route. You paid $30 and received a wrist band that allowed you on and off the bus. The bus went to many of hte campgrounds and into Sturgis. Eat, Drink and be merry and hop on the bus, no dui. The bus was always a wild crowd.

To post pics they need to be somewhere public, not your hard drive. Go to the Advanced Post Form just to the right of the Quick Reply and click the 12th button from the left, it looks like a post card. Insert the URL of where your picture lives on the WWW and there you have it!

RE: Got a taste of some cold weather riding....

Warmed up to 50 degrees here in the Garden State so I took a ride. Heated Gerbing jacket, Aerostich liner, jacket and pants. I look like Ralphy's little brother, Randy, in A Christmas Story.

RE: I need a new bike.....

I was looking at the R1200RT with the lower frame for the vertically challenged. I took it for a ride and I really liked the way it ran and handled. Can't say its new technology because its the tried and true boxer engine. Maybe it felt a bit more refined. The controls were well layed out and the bike just felt well put together. It is a different riding experience than the Road King but one that I still think about. I wouldn't want to get rid of the RK but I would really like to put a lot of miles on the R1200RT. Torn between two lovers I guess.
I like the Harley's, I've ridden them for over 30 years. I also liked the Triumph and the Honda 400 F and the Honda 350 - 4. My first bike was a Honda 450 CB, Honda's thoroughbred at the time. What I don't like is Harley's attitude in dealing with me as a long time customer. Your bike doesn't run correctly and we couldn't fix it? Too bad, they all run like that. Buy another one. Not likely. In case Harley hasn't noticed, a lot of young folks AREN'T buying Harleys. Their loyal customer base is leaving like overtaxed New Jerseyans fleeing the Garden State because Harley has forgotten who got them where they were. Just my 2¢.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

That really "creates negative pressure". I'm hoping that the guys I just took the bike to are better. They seem to be very up front about everything. They are also Power Commander certified if that means anything. Hope you get everything sorted out and get the $130 back.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

Just got back from the indy with good news and bad news. Good news is that they figured out what the problem is and has been for a long time, boogered intake gaskets (a technical term). Won't cost all that much to replace.
The bad news which is really good news is that the mechanic noticed that a small tar covered rock got stuck in the drive belt and pushed through the belt doing a fair amount of damage to the belt. The cords had started to fray around the rock. It took a fair amount of time rolling and looking to find the stupid thing but once I saw it I had one of those "HOLY SH!T" moments. I can't imagine losing the drive belt at speed would be a fun time. The belt is about a buck eighty and the labor is more than that. I really doubt the dealer would have found it or even noticed based on my past experience with them. He was apologetic about the cost and the fact that I had brought the bike in for something else and they found that as well. I thanked him over and over for paying attention and noticing it. Definitely a good catch. He also found a cruise control wire that was damaged and could short to the frame. I don't have cruise control so that is just a tape and relocate job.
The proof will be in the pudding, I just want to be able to ride the bike and not have to wonder if I'll make it home. So far I'm giving them a thumbs up and a deposit on the work. More to come.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

Just dropped my bike off at the indy this afternoon. Told him what was wrong and he nodded that he has had several with the same situation. Sounds like he knew where to look. We'll see when I get the bike back. Same deal as Howsit2003, shop has been there forever, good rep, mechanics that get dirty but the bikes leave clean, they listen, they ask questions and I hope that they will get it done. Asked a bunch of people for recommendations for shops and that is the one that always gets mentioned.
