RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

GPS? Half the fun of riding is getting lost. Until it rains or hails. Yes, but a GPS has the ability to help you find the nearest watering hole. Even when you're lost - there are priorities. We're going to ride about 4,800 miles. Plenty of riding without getting lost or stuck in the dessert too far from a gas station. A gas station is NOT a watering hole.

RE: Anybody like the new Road King Custom?

Check on eBay. Most of the GPS manufacturers offer a handlebar mount for conventional "cage" GPS units. I know Garmin and Tom Tom do - can't testify for the rest.

RE: Victory Cross Country?

There's a reason why they make chocolate and vanilla. Personally, I prefer Harley-Davidson over every other brand out there. If you have to ask me why - you wouldn't understand my answer.

RE: Victory Cross Country?

Anyone see a Victory Cross Country up close? Looks good from a distance of 25 feet, but when you get close, you see plenty of blunders and short-cuts. Fairing looks great, but what are those "bat ears" doing on the windshield? And that "flying butress" engine guard? The motor could use some work as it looks like it was designed for an air compressor and unfortunately sounds like one. Mufflers look Japanese, but I guess you can fix them with a hack-saw. Front & rear fenders and saddlebags look like Victory spent all their resources styling these items. Wheels are just plain ugly. Geez!! I know this is a first attempt of a new model, but bizaaro styling seems to be Victory's penchant--not modern engineering. C'mon Victory! well you're not gonna confuse it with a harley, honda, yamaha or all the other look a likes. i personaly think it looks great. test drive one and you'll see and feel the difference. nice to see another american company step up and give us riders what we want. Harleys are NOT look-a-likes. Harley is the original V-Twin design - it's the others who are the look-a-likes. Food for thought: Ever wonder why, while the American auto industry is trying to make their cars look as Asian as possible - the Japanese are working 25 hours a day, 8 days a week to make their motorcycles look as much like Harley-Davidsons as possible? Kinda looks like somebody knows us better than we know ourselves.

RE: What happened to Buell?

While reading the Feb. issue of AR, I was shocked to see HD dropping the whole Buell line. Yes it made sense for them to ditch MV Agusta, but Buell???!!! That's like cutting off one arm just to lose 10 pounds!! Buell gave HD much needed bragging rights in the high-performance bike market, and offered a good future for developing the old air-cooled V-twin. The photo on pg.14 shows Reg and everyone (but Erik) looking like they just ate a bug. And why is Erik smiling? Is he the only one of his team left with a job at HD? I rode a new 1125CR last summer and couldn't get over it. This looked like the best machine to show the world that an American motorcycle could stand up to any foreign competition--not just change the rules to exclude them. Yes I'm mad!!! I honestly think you can draw a paralel between what happened to Buell and what has repeatedly happened in the auto industry. Once iconic brands like Studebaker, Hudson and Packard, and more recently, Oldsmobile and Plymouth, died because the parents quit nurturing their offspring. I never thought Harley-Davidson's heart was really in nurturing, supporting or growing Buell. When it came time to do some financial trimming, Buell was considered "fat" and was the obvious choice. At least in the eyes of the bean counters.

RE: Road trip to Sturgis...

...can a boot save yer life when you come off the bike at 80 mph... Nope it can't, but if you live through an 80 mph drop, eventually you're going to need your legs again, and a good pair of boots can save the feet and ankles at that speed... Cheers to Matlock! One of the things I've never understood is how we express our individuality by all wearing the same uniform. I say ride what the f*ck you want, wear what the f*ck you want, be who the f*ck you want to be... Greenman. Alright, everybody join in....... "I gotta be me - yeah, I gotta be me..............."

RE: Road trip to Sturgis...

...I hear ya, rideslow.....but from a purely technical point of view...the moccassin boots are worn underneath my jeans...it would seem that a layer of jeans over a layer of leather would be about as strong as a cavalry type boot worn on the outside...ala...m'bike police ofshisers...but I could be wrong.... ...my buddy has some mid-calf high boots...very sweet....but very expensive... ...I have regular riding boots too....they come up over the ankle but that is about it....in the summer they are *****in' hot and uncomfortable.... ...I need to find a happy compromise.... Pump Freon through your foot boards/pegs?

RE: Anybody like the new Sportster 48?

It misses the mark for me, but I can't really explain why. I usually like mirrors mounted low like that, but the bracket looks funky. This one of those bikes that probably looks better in person. Good possibility. I thought the Rocker was the worst looking Harley I had ever seen. In pictures. Once I saw one in person, it wasn't as bad as I thought. I still don't care a lot for it, but it got a ton better up close and personal.

RE: Anybody like the new Sportster 48?

Yeah. PayLoader, that was kinda my way of thinking on the "48" also. I actually like most of the recent variations on the Sportster, but it's still too small a bike for me.

RE: Road trip to Sturgis...

...I wonder about that sometimes..at any given bike event....how many bikers are carrying a piece....I don't carry any more...but my ridin' buddy won't even leave his house widdout a hawgleg in his pocket.... ...true...I've been in some biker bars where I wish I had a machine gun in each pocket, plus a bullet proof vest...'jes to feel safe.....but after much analizing....I figured paranoia was ruling my life.... ...I should avoid places like that....but my curiousity gits the better of me sometimes.... ...we have a biker bar in mah neck of the woods....where if you ain't carrying a weapon, they'll issue you one at the door....he he...a tough place...would'nt even dream of going in there after 10 pm unless I had 3-4 really, really big fully armed friends with me On April 1, 1978, the day I took delivery of my brand spankin new Superglide, before I pulled away from the dealership, the owner asked me if I had any big rides planned. I (half) jokingly said "yeah, one of these days I'm goin to Gilley's for a beer". Well, during our trip through Texas, we did exactly that. Naturally, it didn't look anything like it did in "Urban Cowboy" - maybe 50 people in there at the most. But what I found most interesting was the sign, just as you walked in the door, where there was NO way you could miss it as you paid your cover charge: "PLEASE CHECK GUNS BEFORE ENTERING" And to answer the question before you ya'll ask it, NO we didn't. We were trained that the only way you hand your piece to someone else is they've got the drop on ya.

RE: Road trip to Sturgis...

...cool pic...y'all look like a bunch of bad arse biker dudes :-) Well, yeah, in a kinda sorta roundabout way - we were bad azzes in the sense that all 3 of us were carrying pea-shooters. LEGALLY. They were issued to us in Pennsylvania. Ask me no questions - I tell you no lies. OH - and thanks a heap for postin the pic, King. I keep starin at it tryin to figger out who the young dude is standin by the Harley. Good lookin guy, ain't he? He looks familiar.

Go to the Advanced Post Form (above the quick post box) for more posting options and click the 12th button from the left above the reply box. It will ask you for the URL of the photo on the good old www. It has to be on the web, you can't post it from your PC. There are plenty of free photo hosting sites. Short of that you can e-mail me the photo and I'll host it on a site that I keep to play around with. Hope that helps. It would help a heap more if'n I knew your e-mail addy.

RE: Road trip to Sturgis...

...yeah...well...it's actually 1,800 miles there..plus 1,800s mile back, plus some sightseeing time...I can see this trip being 5,000 miles 'afore I'm done... all this is in 10 days or so....I'm gonna need some serious butt cream !!!!! I've been told to look for a place to stay outside Sturgis....supposedly many places to pick from. Many, many moons ago (1985 to be exact), two friends and I left western Pennsylvania and headed for Harlingin, Texas for the Confederate Air Force show. We took a few detours along the way to visit and sight-see, and we actually rode a little further south to Brownsville, paid a little Mexican kid a quarter each to watch the bikes, and walked into Mexico to do some shopping. One of the guys was on a '78 BMW (don't remember the displacement) and the other one was on a brand new Honda Aspencade. They carried their shaving gear and a change of Skivvies in their saddlebags. I, on the other hand, was on my '78 FXE Harley Superglide - towing a 2-wheel trailer with all our camping gear (and MY Skivvies). Each night, we rented a space at a Kampgrounds of America, set up the 8x10 cabin tent, and lived large. The next morning, $0.50 got us a clean towel (each), a small bar of soap and a hot shower. The entire trip was 4,210 miles - in 10 days. We had NO problem making 600 miles a day - but we were a LOT younger then. At the ripe old age of 63, I think about 400 miles would probably be my limit today. Howzit, I applaud (and admire) your optimism, but I kinda sorta think ya might wanna do the math before ya set out on that long a putt. You and your azz ain't as young or durable as they usta was. BTW: I have a pretty decent jpg of us at our campsite on that trip. I'd be happy to post it here (just so ya'll don't think I'm tellin a tall tale) if someone will walk me through the step-by-step for doing that.

RE: New Years Day Ride

well, dang, Rode Slow...you've got yerself a prize mamma there....good for her...I wimped out...it was 'jes raining too hard to ride here.. but I made up for it yesterday.....even though it was BITTER COLD....somewhere in the 40's.....I managed some 3-4 hours saddle time... my better half can always hear me coming.....so she'll hit the garage door opener as I come around the corner.....'she times it so as I come on the driveway the garage door is fully opened and I can ride right on in the garage...how sweet is that.....as I walk in the house, she'll have a bowl of hot chili or stew waiting on me.....plus a kiss and a hug...after about 30 minutes, I go back in the garage and put my bike to bed...in the winter time, my bike has a "blanky " to keep it warm... Sounds like the Scoot is ALMOST as spoiled rotten as you are.

RE: Will my warranty be voided, HD

Bottom line answer to your question is "probably" YES. There are a LOT more things the dealer will do to your Scoot during scheduled maintenance than just change plugs and oil. A lot of adjustments and tightening are required during the scheduled service intervals - ESPECIALLY the 1k. During the 10k service on my '05 Road King, they replaced the front motor mount under warranty. If there was something wrong with it, I would have probably never caught it until it was too late and I ended up having to pay $$$$ for it. I agree, $400 - $500 is a lot to shell out. But if you plan to keep it for any length of time, I'd suck it up and have it done. Years ago, Fram ran a commercial on TV about how often you should change the oil filter on your car. An actor posing as a mechanic would say: "You can pay me now - or you can pay me later". I always thought that was a pretty wise statement.
